Research and Development Project Management Presentation

Research and Development Project Management
Presented By:  David W. Paulson, President Accuer, Inc

Monthly Meeting Abstract:

Today’s hardware R&D projects have levels of uncertainty and complexity that exceed the capabilities of traditional project management. Fortunately, there are well established bodies of knowledge such as Lean, Agile, and Theory of Constraints that have provided significant improvements in Manufacturing, Software Development, and Business Management. Even though those systems and challenges are different than R&D projects, some of the principles and methods from each of them can be applied and significant improvements realized. This presentation will review those principles as well as a surprising discovery regarding the largest overall cause of delay in most projects, and how to prevent it.

About the Presenter:

By the end of his first day as a mechanical engineer, David realized he liked fixing process problems more than working on design problems. So five years later he volunteered for a layoff and became an independent consultant for engineering processes and tools. In years since, he has been exposed to an incredibly wide variety of problems faced by R&D teams as well as the latest solutions. In sharing this insight and perspective he has become an award winning presenter and writer. His presentations have been at local and national meetings of associations such as PTC/USER, PDMA, PLMIG, PMI and APICS. David has a BSME, M.S. in Management Science, and was NPDP certified by PDMA (Product Development and Management Association). He's a founding partner at Playbook, an NPD solutions provider whose sole purpose is helping companies develop a superior product development process so they can dominate their market.
